CCL News

Luke becomes a National Champion

5/16/12 - Last weekend Luke came in tied for 1st in the K-5 division of the National Elementary School Championship. This has certainly been the year of the Xie. Check out all of these accomplishments, and don't forget that Luke is only a 4th grader. Does anyone know if there has ever been another Ohio 4th grader with a rating in the 1900's?

- National K-5 co-champion

- Ohio Middle School Champion and qualified to play in the National Barber tournament

- Ohio Grade Level Champion

- Qualified to play in the 2012 World Youth Championship!!

Maggie, Abhi, and Stanley Shine at Cincinnati Open

5/8/12 - Not too many of us competed in the Cincinnati Open last weekend but those that did really shined. Maggie came in tied for first in the Open section with CCL Coach Hans. I am not aware of a 5th grader ever winning a major Ohio open tournament before. Abhi came in clear first in the U-1900 section. This is especially nice after just taking clear first in the U-1800 section of the Cardinal Open last January. I think that I may be seeing a trend. Stanley, who has gained over 300 rating points in the past couple of months, took clear first in the U-1600 section, with Emily finishing clear 2nd.

Whatitbelike finishes 2nd in 4545 league

5/7/12 - The CCL team Whatitbelike finished 2nd out of 30 international teams in the T52 tournament of the 4545 league. This was an excellent result by a young team, competing in an adult league. Congratulations to the team members: Chris, Matthew, Austin, Cody, Rohit, and Stanley.

CCL welcomes new Central Ohio Coach, Life Master John Stopa

5/3/12 - We are so proud to announce that CCL has added Life Master John Stopa to our coaching staff. Already possessing the best and deepest coaching staff in the Midwest, Coach John adds even more experience and depth to our team coaching approach. Please see more information on Coach John on our coaches page.

CCL finishes in the top 5 spots in the State of Ohio Elementary School Championships

4/16/12 - Last weekend Vikram won the Ohio Elementary School Championship with a last round victory over our current Ohio Middle School Champion, Luke. In 2nd place was Luke, in 3rd place Jacob, in 4th place was Cody, and in 5th place was Matthew. The only games that these players lost were to each other.

Luke breaks 1900 and qualifies for 2012 U-10 World Youth Championships - 5 CCL players now qualified!

4/8/12 - We now have 5 players who have qualified to play in the 2012 World Youth Championships. Coaches Goran and Jovana plan to accompany these young players to Slovenia to help them to compete for their World Championship titles. The list is now: Maggie, Chris, Meghana, Emily, and Luke. An incredible feat has occurred and an amazing experience awaits these young superstars.

CCL finishes 1st and 2nd in the State of Ohio High School Championship

4/2/12 - Last weekend Walker and John defeated everyone in their path before meeting in the last round, while leading the rest of the field by a whole point. A long struggle ended in a draw resulting in Walker coming in 1st place on tiebreaks over John, both finishing with 5.5/6. Walker is planning on taking advantage of his resulting invitation to play in the Denker tournament.

CCL finishes 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th in the State of Ohio Middle School Championships

4/2/12 - Last weekend Luke (4th grade) won the Ohio Middle School Championship on tiebreaks over Abhi (6th grade and defending champion). In 4th place was Maggie (5th grade) and in 5th place was Arjun (7th grade). Across all 4 of these players only a half of a point was lost to a non-CCL player. Luke is planning on taking advantage of his resulting invitation to play in the Barber tournament.

Meghana and Emily qualify for the World Youth Championships

4/2/12 - CCL now has 4 players who have qualified for the 2012 World Youths!  They are Maggie, Chris, Meghana, and Emily!  Luke got his rating up to 1895 last weekend which means that he only needs 5 more rating points to qualify.

Maggie Feng earns Expert title

3/28/12 - Maggie Feng earned her National Experts title last weekend in Pittsburg, playing in 16th Annual Pittsburg Open. She came in tied for 1st in the U-2100 section. This result gained her 50 rating points, bringing her rating up to 2012 (no I did not put the year in by mistake). Not only is Maggie now a National Expert, she is the only female National Expert in her age group in the whole country. She has also become only the 3rd CCL graduate in CCL history, joining both Walker and John to achieve our own special CCL award. Congratulations to some very special achievements by this amazing young chess player.

John Hughes earns Master title

John Hughes earned his Masters title today in Dayton, playing in Pawn Storm 6. He played in the top section, which was a 6 person round robin, and finished 5-0. His wins included a wins against a master and 4 experts. The 38 point gain brought John up to 2215! He has been working really hard to achieve this goal and shows once more that good things come with patience and hard work.

2012 Central Ohio Invitational

Almost every year there is the Central Ohio Invitational Chess Championship. The top 10
players who accept their invitations compete in this 2 weekend round robin event. Both
Walker and John competed and they did well, finishing in 3rd and 4th place respectively.

For this 1st time this year there was also the Junior (K – 12) version of this tournament. It is
held over the same two weekends but is an 8 person round robin. CCL players Maggie, Chris,
Luke, Sam, Vikram, and Arjun competed in this event along with non CCL players Marcus
Blann and John Michael Wright. Chris (2nd grade!!) and Luke (4th grade!) and Marcus Blann all tied for first place
with 5 – 2 score. Chris won the 1st place trophy on tiebreaks.

Abhi

Abhi wins U-1800 section at

Cardinal Open

Congrats to Abhi who finished in clear first place in the the U-1800 section. For his efforts, Abhi won $649 as well as 70 rating points, landing him at 1824.

CCL teams finish 1st & 3rd in 4545 T51

Congratulations to Whatitisiswhatitis for winning the T51 league, U-1400 division.  Whatitisiswhatitis finished on top of 20 international teams to win their league.  They each got a free 2 month extension to their ICC subscription for the victory.  The team composition was Sam, Matthew, Austin, Jason Casden, and Garrett (captain).  Why is it that Garrett’s teams seem to always win? We had two CCL teams in that division.  The other team Whatitbelike (Luke, Chris, Richard, Stanley, Joe) came in tied for 3rd – 4th.  They just missed playing their inner-CCL rivals in the finals by a loss on tie breaks in the pre-ultimate round.

CCL now has its newest and youngest chess scholar crowned with a USCF national championship title. Chris, the only 2nd grader from Ohio was the top seed in his  2nd grade championship section. He competed against 116 second graders from across the country and scored 6-1 with 5 wins and 2 draws. Although Chris tied with a few other players, he took home the first place trophy on tie-breaks.

Maggie and John return from 2011 World Youth Championship in Brazil

Friday, October 21st. Goran wins blindfold simul with 4 wins, 1 loss (Maggie), and 5 draws.

Walker is the new State Champion as CCL kids beat up on adults at the Ohio Chess Congress

Walker is State Co-champion!  He may be the youngest or 2nd youngest open state chess champion in history of Ohio.  And the beat goes on.

Maggie wins U-2000 section!  She dominated the field with a clear 1st place finish.
Ryan came in 3rd and plans to leave Ohio with his newly obtained rating points.

John is State of Ohio Speed Chess Champion!

Chris came in 3rd place in the U-1700 section and should be catching the national spotlight soon as he is only in 2nd grade.

Emily came in 2nd in the U-1400 section.  And continues her march toward this toward the 2012 World Youth championship.  Nani, Mark and David’s mom had the best saying for Emily, “she dresses like a lady but plays like tiger”.

CCL tops new new school year scholastic rankings

The top nine K-6 players in the state are CCL players; lead by Maggie and Abhi.  How great are you, wow!!!

We also have two of the top four K-12 players in the state (Walker and John).

Our girls program is starting to take off, as planned.  We now have 6 of the top 11 girls in the state.  Overwhelming led by Maggie ‘Polgar’ Feng.
